How much does Mendix cost? A straightforward guide

Curious about Mendix, an all-in-one low-code platform including requirements gathering, prototyping, app development, support, monitoring, etc., and wondering what it might cost your organization? Whether you have a small team that wants to quickly build a prototype or a large company developing business-critical applications, understanding the pricing is essential. In this blog, we clearly and simply explain the available licenses, the factors that determine the costs and how you can make an estimate. No complicated calculations or hidden fees, just clear information to help you make well-informed decisions.

Mendix licensing packages

Mendix has three licensing options: Free, Standard and Premium.

  • Free. Perfect for exploring the platform, building prototypes or small personal projects. No support guarantees though, so upgrade if you want reliable performance and product support.
  • Standard. Great for most business apps. You get all the core features, deployment options in your preferred cloud and can build enterprise-ready applications.
  • Premium. The top tier for mission-critical apps and core systems. You get everything in Standard plus enterprise-grade scaling, high availability, and fallback options.

Our focus here is on Standard and Premium, since that’s what most organizations will consider for business applications.

What drives the costs?

There are four main factors:

1. Number of applications

  • Single App License. Best if you’re starting out or building one major app (think of a customer portal, employee app or supplier portal).
  • Multi-App License. Unlimited apps. Cost-effective if you plan to build three or more apps.

2. Number and type of users

  • Internal users. Employees and/or everyone with an email address of your organization.
  • External users. Customers, suppliers or partners. Usually priced lower, because they use the app less frequently.

Developers don’t count toward the user license but must register on Mendix.

3. Deployment method

  • Mendix Cloud (Public). Multi-tenant cloud on AWS.
  • Mendix Cloud Dedicated. Single-tenant clusters for more control.
  • Private or On-Premise. Requires your infrastructure. A support fee applies per app.

Apps run in “environments” (Test, Acceptance, Production), with a minimum of two, and each environment requires resources. Think of it as sizing your cloud capacity (from XS to 4XL).

4. Add-ons

Mendix offers extra tools like Advanced Audit Trail for compliance, Quality & Security Management (QSM) for app quality checks and Menditect Test Automation for automated testing.

Add-ons are optional but can impact your total cost depending on your organization’s needs.

Extra services that can affect price

  • Consulting or development services for complex setups.
  • Starter packages, templates and frameworks to kickstart development.
  • Training of your employees, for example via The Green Carpet, both virtual and on-site.

Why Mendix pricing stands out

Unlike some competitors, Mendix doesn’t charge based on app complexity. You won’t pay more for more pages, integrations, business rules or objects. High-quality apps can be built without worrying about hidden costs. Components like modules and templates can be shared internally or globally, free of charge.

Quick takeaway

Here’s a simple way to estimate:

  1. Decide how many apps you’ll build.
  2. Count your internal and external users.
  3. Choose your deployment method and cloud size
  4. Add any optional add-ons or services.

From there, you’ll have a rough idea of whether Standard or Premium is right for you. For most companies, the tipping point between a single-app license and multi-app license is three apps.

Mendix makes it easy to start small and scale up without unexpected fees. Perfect for organizations that want to move fast and build smart while keeping costs predictable.

Every organization is different. And so is every Mendix setup

Let’s look at your apps, users and deployment needs together and calculate what Mendix would actually cost for your organization. No guesswork. Just clarity.
