Enexis Netbeheer is one of six regional grid operators in the Netherlands. They are responsible for the construction and maintenance of the gas and electricity network. Within the energy transition, Enexis faces major challenges: more work has to be done with the same capacity. This calls for smart, efficient processes. Data quality also plays a crucial role in this.
When installing new gas or electricity stations, all components must be registered in Enexis’s internal system (GEN). Until recently, this was done manually: field workers wrote down information such as serial numbers on paper, after which data processors retyped everything into the system. This process quickly costs each employee an extra hour of work per day and is prone to errors.
Squad Apps developed a smart digital solution that eliminates manual data processing, called BMR 2.0. Field workers now simply take photos of component information, such as labels and serial numbers. Using image recognition, this data is automatically read and entered into the GEN system.
The result? A drastic reduction in manual work and a much smaller chance of errors.
A previous digital attempt failed because the application was too complex and no longer matched real-world workflows. That’s why this upgrade was started in a completely new way using Design Sprints: in a short time, we mapped out the needs of end users in the form of UX designs. These insights became the foundation for the new application. By designing and testing together with users from the very beginning, we created broad support among users and delivered a user-friendly product.
Thanks to this smart approach, Enexis achieved up to 50% time savings in the registration process with BMR 2.0. In addition, data quality has significantly improved and field workers can focus on what they are really good at: building the energy grid of the future. For future development, we are focusing on image recognition and direct GEN integration to achieve 95% time savings with respect to asset registration.
